Hercynite
Hercynite is a mineral in the spinel group with the chemical formula FeAl2O4. It is an oxide mineral composed of iron(II) and aluminium within the cubic spinel structure. In the ideal end-member, Fe2+ occupies the tetrahedral A sites and Al3+ the octahedral B sites of the AB2O4 spinel formula, though natural samples may show some Fe3+ substitution, forming solid solutions with related spinels.
Crystallography and appearance: Hercynite crystallizes in the isometric (cubic) system and commonly occurs as small octahedral
Formation and occurrence: Hercynite forms under high-temperature metamorphic conditions and in aluminous ultramafic to mafic igneous
Etymology and significance: The name derives from the Hercynian (Variscan) orogeny in Europe, the region associated
