Heraldusõigusiga, often shortened to heraldry, is a system of identifying individuals and families through a unique set of visual symbols, primarily coats of arms. It originated in medieval Europe during the Crusades as a means for knights to distinguish themselves on the battlefield, where their armor obscured their faces. Over time, heraldry evolved into a complex system of rules and conventions governing the design, display, and inheritance of armorial bearings.

The core components of a coat of arms include a shield, which bears the main design, and often a helmet, crest, motto, and supporters. The design elements, known as charges, can range from animals and mythical creatures to geometric shapes and everyday objects, each with its own symbolic meaning. Colors, known as tinctures, also play a significant role, with specific rules governing their combination.

Heraldry was historically associated with nobility and aristocracy, serving as a mark of status and lineage. However, it was also adopted by institutions such as cities, guilds, and churches. The practice and regulation of heraldry vary by country, with some nations having official heraldic authorities that grant and oversee armorial bearings, while in others, it is largely a matter of tradition and personal adoption. Despite its historical roots, heraldry continues to be practiced today, albeit with a more symbolic and less functional role than in its medieval origins.
