Heraclius
Heraclius (c. 575–641) was a Byzantine emperor who reigned from 610 to 641. Born in Cappadocia, he rose through the military ranks and, after the overthrow of Phocas, was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 610. He spent the early years stabilizing the eastern provinces and securing the throne, and he led a protracted war against the Sassanian Empire (602–628). The Persians captured Jerusalem in 614, signaling a severe crisis for Byzantium, but by the mid-620s Heraclius’s forces began to turn the tide.
