Henkilönsuojaimiin, often translated as personal protective equipment (PPE), are devices or articles of clothing designed to protect the wearer from hazards. These hazards can range from physical dangers such as falling objects or extreme temperatures to chemical, biological, or radiological threats. The primary purpose of PPE is to reduce the risk of injury or illness by creating a barrier between the individual and the hazard.

The selection of appropriate PPE depends heavily on the specific risks involved in a particular task or environment. Common examples include safety helmets to protect against head injuries, safety glasses or goggles to shield the eyes from debris or chemical splashes, hearing protection like earplugs or earmuffs to prevent noise-induced hearing loss, gloves to protect the hands from cuts, burns, or chemical exposure, and safety footwear to guard against foot injuries. Respiratory protective equipment, such as masks or respirators, is used when there is a risk of inhaling hazardous substances.

In many workplaces, the use of specific PPE is mandated by law or company policy to ensure the safety and well-being of employees. Employers are generally responsible for providing suitable PPE and ensuring that employees are trained on its correct use, maintenance, and limitations. Proper use and maintenance are crucial for the effectiveness of PPE. If PPE is damaged, worn out, or not used correctly, it may not provide adequate protection, potentially leading to accidents or health problems. Regular inspection and replacement of worn or damaged items are therefore essential.
