Henkilöauto is a Finnish term that refers to a motor vehicle designed primarily for the private transportation of individuals and small groups of passengers. The word literally translates to “person car” or “personal car.” In Finland, kuten many other European countries, henkilöautos are the most common form of personal transport and include a wide range of vehicle types such as sedans, estate cars, hatchbacks, coupes, station wagons, and pickup trucks with a passenger compartment. They are distinguished from larger commercial vehicles such as lorries, buses, and trucks, which carry goods, large numbers of passengers, or both.

The concept dates back to the early 20th century, as the first gasoline and diesel vehicles began to appear in the Finnish automotive market. By the 1920s and 1930s, the availability of affordable henkilöautos grew steadily, especially after Finland joined the European Union and streamlined regulations on vehicle safety and emissions. A distinctive feature of henkilöautos in Finland is the adaptation to extreme weather conditions; many models come equipped with all‑wheel drive, winter tires, and robust heating systems.

In everyday Finnish language, the nickname “henkilöauto” is often shortened to “henkä” and used colloquially. It serves as a generic label for vehicles that are not subject to special licensing or registration restrictions that apply to buses, trucks, or agricultural tractors. Private owners of henkilöautos must follow standard licensing rules, such as holding a category B driver’s licence, and the vehicles must comply with Finnish and European safety, emission, and noise regulations.

The term is frequently referenced in Finnish traffic laws, insurance policies, and vehicle‑registration documents, where it separates passenger cars from other vehicle categories that are subject to different regulatory regimes.
