Hengityspysähdys

Hengityspysähdys, also known as respiratory arrest, is a critical medical condition where breathing stops. This cessation of breathing can lead to a lack of oxygen supply to the body's organs, particularly the brain, which can result in irreversible damage or death if not treated promptly.

The causes of hengityspysähdys are varied and can include severe trauma, drug overdose, drowning, suffocation, allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and underlying medical conditions like heart attack or stroke. In some cases, it can occur as a complication of anesthesia or during severe illness.

Recognizing the signs of hengityspysähdys is crucial for initiating immediate life-saving measures. These signs include the absence of chest movement, no breath sounds, and a lack of response from the individual. Cyanosis, a bluish discoloration of the skin, lips, or nail beds, may also be present due to the lack of oxygen.

The immediate response to hengityspysähdys is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR involves chest compressions and rescue breaths to manually circulate oxygenated blood throughout the body. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, it should be used as soon as possible. Prompt medical attention is essential, and emergency services should be contacted immediately. Treatment in a hospital setting will focus on addressing the underlying cause of the respiratory arrest and providing advanced life support.
