Hengityspussit, also known as air sacs or pneumatic sacs, are a crucial component of the respiratory system in many animals, particularly birds, reptiles, and some fish. These thin-walled, elastic structures are extensions of the lungs and play a vital role in efficient respiration.

In birds, for instance, hengityspussit are an integral part of a unique unidirectional airflow system. This system allows for a continuous supply of oxygenated air to the lungs, even during exhalation. The air sacs themselves do not directly participate in gas exchange; instead, they act as bellows, storing air and directing its flow through the lungs. Birds typically have a complex arrangement of these sacs, often numbering nine, located throughout their body cavity and even extending into bones.

In reptiles, hengityspussit serve a similar function, aiding in ventilation and providing a larger surface area for gas exchange, although their respiratory system is generally less efficient than that of birds. Some aquatic animals, like certain types of fish, also possess structures analogous to hengityspussit that assist with buoyancy and oxygen uptake from the water. The specific number, location, and complexity of hengityspussit vary significantly across different species, reflecting their diverse ecological adaptations and respiratory needs.
