Hengityskone, known in English as a ventilator, is a medical device that assists or completely takes over the function of breathing for a person. It is used when a patient's respiratory system is unable to adequately oxygenate the blood or remove carbon dioxide from the body. This can be due to various conditions such as respiratory failure, lung disease, trauma, or during surgical procedures requiring anesthesia.

There are several types of ventilators. Invasive ventilators require an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube to be inserted into the patient's airway to deliver air directly into the lungs.
