Hemicellulosic refers to materials or processes derived from hemicelluloses, a diverse group of heteropolysaccharides embedded in plant cell walls alongside cellulose and lignin. Unlike cellulose, hemicelluloses are branched and amorphous, with shorter chains that contribute to the matrix surrounding cellulose microfibrils. They are typically more easily hydrolyzed than cellulose and vary in composition by plant source.

Hemicelluloses are composed of a mix of sugars, including xylose, arabinose, mannose, glucose, galactose, and uronic acids. The major types include xylans, mannans, glucans, and xyloglucans, often with acetate or ferulic acid substitutions and cross-links that affect solubility and reactivity. In plant cell walls, hemicelluloses help determine porosity, hydration, and mechanical properties, and their content ranges widely by species and tissue (e.g., hardwoods, softwoods, agricultural residues).

Processing and utilization of hemicellulosic material focus on its depolymerization to simple sugars and on its conversion into value-added chemicals. Acid or enzymatic hydrolysis releases pentose and hexose sugars such as xylose and glucose, which can be fermented to biofuels or converted into platform chemicals like xylitol, furfural, and hydroxymethylfurfural. Enzymatic methods employ xylanases, xylosidases, and related enzymes to target specific linkages. Hemicellulose-rich fractions are also explored for biopolymer and material applications, including hydrocolloids, films, and composites, as part of integrated biorefinery approaches.
