Hematogênica

Hematogênica is a term used in medicine to describe something originating from or related to the blood. It is derived from the Greek words "haima" meaning blood and "genesis" meaning origin or production.

The most common application of the term hematogênica is in the context of infection. A hematogenous infection is one that spreads through the bloodstream. This means that microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi, enter the circulation and are then transported to various parts of the body. Once in the bloodstream, these pathogens can lodge in different tissues or organs, leading to infection at those sites. Examples include hematogenous osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone that spreads via the blood, or endocarditis, an infection of the heart valves also often spread through the bloodstream.

The route of entry for the microorganisms causing a hematogenous infection can vary. It might stem from an infection elsewhere in the body, such as a urinary tract infection or pneumonia, from which bacteria enter the bloodstream. In some cases, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems or certain medical conditions, bacteria may enter the bloodstream from the skin or gastrointestinal tract.

Diagnosing a hematogenous infection typically involves blood cultures to identify the causative microorganism and its susceptibility to antibiotics. Treatment usually consists of intravenous antibiotics or antifungals, depending on the pathogen. The prognosis for hematogenous infections depends on factors such as the type of microorganism, the patient's overall health, and the promptness of diagnosis and treatment.
