Helyragok

Helyragok are suffixes in Hungarian that attach to nouns to express place and direction. They behave as locational or directional case markers and can convey where something is, where it is going, or where it comes from. Unlike prepositions in some languages, helyragok are inflectional endings that attach directly to the noun stem and follow vowel harmony rules.

Locative functions and forms

Helyragok cover several spatial meanings, including static location (where something is), movement toward a place (to/into a place), and movement from a place (from a place). The choice of suffix depends on the noun’s ending and vowel harmony. Asztalon means on the table; asztalra means onto the table; asztalnál means at the table; asztalból or asztalról mean from the table.
