Heliornis

Heliornis is a genus of birds in the family Heliornithidae, commonly known as sunbitterns. This family is also sometimes referred to as the "finfoots" due to their lobed feet, which are adapted for swimming. There is only one living species in this genus, the American Sunbittern (Heliornis fulica). Another species, the African Sunbittern (Heliornis senegalensis), was formerly classified in this genus but is now placed in the genus Podiceps.

The American Sunbittern is found in tropical Central and South America, inhabiting freshwater wetlands such as swamps, marshes, and the slow-moving parts of rivers. It is a shy and reclusive bird, often difficult to observe. Its plumage is a striking combination of grey, brown, and black, with a distinctive white-barred black patch on its throat. They have long, pointed bills and relatively short legs with lobed toes.

Sunbitterns are primarily solitary birds and are known for their elaborate courtship displays. They feed on small fish, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans, which they catch by wading in shallow water or by diving. The American Sunbittern builds a nest of vegetation, often on a low branch overhanging water, and both parents participate in incubation and raising the young. Their distinctive, loud calls can often be heard before the bird is seen. The conservation status of the American Sunbittern is considered to be of Least Concern by the IUCN.
