Heliopsis

Heliopsis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as oxeye sunflowers or false sunflowers. Native to North America, the genus comprises about 20 species, with Heliopsis helianthoides being the most widely cultivated. These herbaceous perennials form clumps of erect stems and can reach substantial heights depending on species and cultivar.

Leaves are opposite and range from lanceolate to ovate with serrated margins. Flower heads resemble sunflowers, featuring bright yellow ray florets around a central disk that may be yellow, orange, or brown as it matures. Bloom typically occurs from midsummer through fall, providing long-lasting color in gardens.

Distribution and habitat: Heliopsis species are native to the United States and Mexico and are commonly grown in gardens and landscapes. They tolerate a variety of soils and are often found in borders, meadows, and prairie-style plantings. Some species are more vigorous or taller than others, giving gardeners different choices for height and texture.

Cultivation and care: Full sun and well-drained soil are preferred. They are relatively drought-tolerant once established and tolerate a range of soil types, including average garden soil. Propagation is by seed or division; dividing every few years helps maintain vigor. Deadheading can encourage continued flowering, and many selections are hardy in USDA zones 4–9, depending on species.

Ecology and uses: Heliopsis plants attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies and are popular in ornamental borders and cut-flower arrangements. The genus name derives from Greek for sun, reflecting the sunlike appearance of the blooms, while common names emphasize their resemblance to true sunflowers (Helianthus).
