Heliksids

Heliksids are a family of gastropod mollusks belonging to the superfamily Helicoidea. This family is characterized by its coiled, external shells, which are typically dextral, meaning they coil in a clockwise direction. Heliksids are found across a wide range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and gardens, primarily in temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia.

The shells of heliksids vary in size and color, often displaying patterns of stripes or spots. Their bodies are soft and muscular, with a distinct head bearing tentacles that house their eyes. These snails are primarily herbivores, feeding on a variety of plant matter, algae, and fungi. They play a role in their ecosystems as decomposers and as a food source for various predators.

Reproduction in heliksids is typically sexual, with most species being hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. However, they generally still require a mate for fertilization. The eggs are usually laid in damp soil or leaf litter.
