Hedgelaying

Hedgelaying is a traditional method of managing hedges, primarily used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It involves pleaching live woody stems, which are then bent and layered, forming a living fence. The process typically starts by partially cutting the hedge stems, leaving them attached to the root. These stems are then laid down at an angle, often in a zigzag pattern, and interwoven to create a dense barrier. This technique rejuvenates older hedges, encourages new growth, and provides a robust, stock-proof barrier for livestock.

Different regions have developed distinct styles of hedgelaying, reflecting local materials, climate, and traditional farming practices. Examples include the Midland style, known for its orderly and tightly packed pleachers, and the Devon style, which often incorporates thorny species and a more informal appearance. The practice is usually undertaken during the dormant season, typically between autumn and early spring, to minimize stress on the plants and avoid disrupting wildlife.

Historically, hedgelaying was a crucial skill for farmers, providing boundaries for fields, protection for crops, and habitats for wildlife. While modern fencing has become more prevalent, hedgelaying is experiencing a resurgence as a sustainable land management practice and a way to preserve cultural heritage.
