Hedelmöityshoitoihin, often translated as assisted reproductive technology (ART) or fertility treatments, refers to a range of medical procedures used to help individuals or couples overcome infertility and achieve pregnancy. These treatments involve manipulating eggs, sperm, and/or embryos outside of the body.

The most common form of ART is in vitro fertilization (IVF). In IVF, eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryo(s) are then transferred to the uterus. Other ART techniques include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg, and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), which involve placing eggs and sperm or fertilized eggs into the fallopian tubes.

Fertility treatments are typically considered when natural conception has not occurred after a period of regular, unprotected intercourse, or when underlying medical conditions are known to affect fertility. These conditions can include ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility.

The process of fertility treatments can be emotionally and physically demanding, often involving hormonal medications, monitoring, and multiple procedures. Success rates vary depending on factors such as the age of the individuals, the cause of infertility, and the specific treatment protocol used. Many clinics offer counseling services to support individuals and couples throughout their treatment journey.
