Hedelmättömyydeksi is a Finnish term that translates to infertility. It refers to the inability of a person or couple to conceive a child after a period of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. This condition can affect both men and women, and its causes are diverse.

In women, infertility can stem from ovulation disorders, damage to the fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine abnormalities, or age-related factors. Ovulation disorders involve irregular or absent ovulation, often due to hormonal imbalances. Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can prevent the egg from reaching the uterus or sperm from reaching the egg. Endometriosis, a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, can interfere with fertility. Uterine abnormalities, such as fibroids or polyps, can also make implantation difficult.

In men, infertility is frequently caused by problems with sperm production, sperm transport, or erectile dysfunction. Low sperm count, poor sperm motility (ability to move), or abnormal sperm shape can hinder fertilization. Blockages in the reproductive tract can prevent sperm from being ejaculated.

Infertility can be diagnosed through various medical tests, including blood tests to check hormone levels, imaging scans to examine reproductive organs, and semen analysis for men. Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause and may include medication to stimulate ovulation, surgical procedures to correct anatomical issues, or assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Psychological support is also an important aspect of managing infertility.
