In organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), heavy atoms can significantly enhance intersystem crossing, the process by which an excited electron transitions from a singlet state to a triplet state. While this effect is desirable for phosphorescent OLEDs, which utilize triplet excitons for light emission, it can be detrimental in fluorescent OLEDs.
