Heartfield
Heartfield is the pseudonym of Helmut Herzfelde (1891–1968), a German graphic artist and photographer who helped pioneer photomontage as a political art form. Born in Berlin, he became a central figure in the Weimar-era avant-garde and the broader Dada movement. With his brother Wieland Herzfelde and the Malik-Verlag publishing house, he contributed to left‑wing publications, notably the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung (AIZ). His photomontages fused found photographs with bold typography to critique militarism, capitalism, and the Nazi rising power, turning everyday images into pointed political messages.
