Havaitsemishäiriöt, or perceptual disorders in English, refer to a wide range of conditions where an individual's ability to perceive sensory information is altered. These disorders can affect any of the senses, including vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. They are not due to a problem with the sensory organs themselves but rather with how the brain processes the incoming signals.

Visual perceptual disorders are common and can manifest in various ways. Examples include agnosia, where individuals have difficulty recognizing familiar objects, faces, or sounds despite having intact sensory organs. Prosopagnosia, or face blindness, is a specific type of visual agnosia. Other visual perceptual issues might involve difficulties with spatial awareness, depth perception, or understanding the relationship between objects.

Auditory perceptual disorders can affect the ability to distinguish sounds, understand speech, or locate the source of a sound. Aphasia, which can affect language comprehension and production, often involves auditory processing difficulties.

Perceptual disorders can stem from various causes, including neurological conditions like stroke, brain injury, dementia, or developmental disorders. They can also be associated with certain psychiatric conditions. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological and psychological assessment. Treatment approaches vary depending on the underlying cause and the specific type of perceptual disorder, and may include therapies aimed at improving compensatory strategies or addressing the underlying neurological issues.
