Hauptfrage

Hauptfrage, literally "main question," is a term widely used in German-language academia to denote the central question guiding a project, paper, or argument. It functions as the overarching inquiry around which aims, methods, and evidence are organized. The Hauptfrage is typically complemented by subordinate questions (Nebenfragen) that subdivide the topic and help structure the investigation. In many disciplines, it also helps delineate the scope and significance of the work.

Formulating the Hauptfrage involves identifying a research problem, clarifying its relevance, and expressing it as a concise, open-ended and answerable query. A well-crafted Hauptfrage is specific, bounded, and feasible within available time and resources, and it should guide data collection, analysis, and argumentation. The question often emerges from a review of existing literature and may be refined as the study progresses.

Practically, the Hauptfrage may be equivalent to the research question (Forschungsfrage) or constitute the umbrella under which several Forschungsfragen fall. In theses and dissertations, the Hauptfrage helps determine methodology and theoretical framework, while the Nebenfragen operationalize components of the inquiry. Examples include: in history, “Welche Ursachen und Folgen hatte Ereignis X?” in the social sciences, “Wie beeinflusst Faktor Y Z?” A careful Hauptfrage supports clear conclusions and coherent argumentation; poorly formulated questions can lead to a lack of focus and overstretched scope.
