Harnkanal

Harnkanal is a canal in the fictional nation of Veridia, running through the Veridian Lowlands from the upper Harn River to Lake Lyria. It provides irrigation for crops, flood management, and limited inland navigation for nearby towns. Construction occurred between 1885 and 1892, designed by engineer Elise Kohn and funded by the Veridian State Council. The canal spans roughly 60 kilometers, with an average depth of about 2.5 meters. The route passes through the towns of Bronn and Nordhaven and includes a main navigation channel plus several feeder canals.

The system originally relied on gravity flow, with four locks near Bronn to accommodate elevation changes. In the mid-20th century two pumping stations were added to extend service into drier years, and a modernization program in the 1990s introduced automated gate controls and sediment management.

Ecologically, the Harnkanal corridor supports wetlands and provides habitat for downstream species; a protected wildlife corridor runs along its southern bank. A restoration program between 2010 and 2015 aimed to reduce erosion and improve water quality.

Today, Harnkanal is managed by the Veridia Water Authority. It continues to support agriculture through irrigation, enables limited commercial boating, and attracts recreational users and tourists with towpaths and scenic views.
