Hariri is a prominent Lebanese family name associated with a Sunni Muslim dynasty that has played a significant role in Lebanon’s politics and economy since the late 20th century. The surname derives from the Arabic harir, meaning silk, and historically indicated silk merchants from the port city of Sidon (Saida). Over time, the Hariris built a diversified business network spanning construction, real estate, and related sectors, which helped establish their influence in Lebanon and the region.

The Hariri family rose to international prominence through Rafik Hariri, a leading businessman who became a central political figure in Lebanon. He served as prime minister for multiple terms and led postwar reconstruction efforts after Lebanon’s civil conflict. His leadership and financial resources gave the family substantial clout in Lebanese politics and economic life.

Rafik Hariri’s assassination in 2005 triggered widespread protests known as the Cedar Revolution and reshaped Lebanon’s political landscape. An international investigation led to the creation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to pursue those responsible for the killing.
