Happamuuslähde, a Finnish term that translates to "acidity source" or "acidification source," refers to any entity or process that contributes to an increase in the acidity of a substance, most commonly water or soil. This phenomenon is a significant environmental concern with far-reaching consequences.

Natural occurrences of increased acidity can be attributed to geological formations, such as volcanic activity and the dissolution of certain minerals. However, anthropogenic activities are the primary drivers of widespread acidification. The combustion of fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, releases sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere. These gases react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids.

When these acidic compounds are deposited onto the Earth's surface, either directly as acid rain, fog, or snow, or indirectly through dry deposition of gases and particles, they can alter the pH of natural environments. Acidification of lakes and streams can harm aquatic life, leading to fish kills and disruptions in entire ecosystems. Soil acidification can release toxic metals like aluminum, which can damage plant roots and inhibit growth, impacting agriculture and forests. It can also leach essential nutrients from the soil, further stressing plant life. Addressing the sources of acidification, primarily through emissions reductions from industrial processes and transportation, is crucial for mitigating its detrimental effects.
