Hapetonemätasapaino refers to a state of imbalance in the body's acid-base homeostasis, specifically characterized by a reduction in the partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood (hypoxemia) alongside an increase in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the arterial blood (hypercapnia). This condition signifies a failure in the respiratory system's ability to adequately exchange gases.

The underlying causes of hapetonemätasapaino are diverse and often relate to severe respiratory dysfunction. These can include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, severe asthma attacks, pneumonia, neuromuscular disorders affecting breathing muscles, drug overdoses that suppress respiratory drive, and certain types of lung injuries. The reduced oxygen levels can lead to tissue hypoxia, while the elevated carbon dioxide levels contribute to respiratory acidosis, which can have systemic effects.

Diagnosis typically involves arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, which directly measures the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide, as well as the pH of the blood. Clinical signs and symptoms may include shortness of breath, confusion, lethargy, cyanosis, and rapid breathing.
