Haora

Haora, also spelled Howrah, is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Howrah district and is part of the Kolkata metropolitan area. Haora lies on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite Kolkata, and is connected to the city across the river by a major bridge.

Historically, Howrah developed as a commercial and transportation hub during the colonial period. Today the city remains closely linked to Kolkata through road, rail, and river transport, contributing to the economic orbit of the region. It hosts one of India’s oldest and busiest railway complexes and serves as a major gateway for long-distance and suburban train services.

The Rabindra Setu, commonly known as the Howrah Bridge, spans the Hooghly River and links Howrah with central Kolkata. Opened in 1943, it is an iconic symbol of the area and a critical piece of regional infrastructure. Howrah Junction railway station and surrounding facilities form a central part of the local economy, supporting passenger movement and freight traffic.

Governance in Haora is provided by the Howrah Municipal Corporation, which administers the city within the wider district framework. The urban area includes dense residential neighborhoods, markets, schools, and cultural sites, reflecting a blend of historic development and modern growth.
