Hangumism refers to a cultural and linguistic phenomenon originating in South Korea, characterized by the use of the honorific suffix *-um* (or *-um-ni*) attached to nouns, verbs, or adjectives to convey a sense of respect, familiarity, or emotional warmth. This suffix is often employed in informal or intimate contexts, particularly among friends, family, or close acquaintances, to soften language and create a more affectionate tone.

The term *hangumism* is derived from the Korean word *hangum* (한금), which combines *han* (한), meaning "Korean," and *gum* (금), meaning "gold" or "precious." Together, they evoke the idea of something valuable or cherished, reflecting the sentiment behind the usage of *-um*. While *-um* is not a formal grammatical suffix, its widespread use in modern Korean speech has made it a notable feature of contemporary Korean language and culture.

Hangumism is distinct from other Korean honorifics, such as *-ssi* or *-nim*, which are typically used in more formal or respectful contexts. Instead, *-um* is often employed in casual conversations to express endearment, camaraderie, or a playful tone. For example, instead of saying *saram* (사람, "person"), one might say *sarum* (사람-um) to sound warmer or more approachable. Similarly, verbs like *jalsseumnida* (잘 하세요, "do well") might be shortened to *jalsseum* (잘 하-um) in an informal setting.

The popularity of hangumism has been amplified by digital communication, particularly through social media and messaging apps, where its use has become a common way to convey friendliness and approachability.
