Hampaiset

Hampaiset is a small archipelago of islands belonging to the Finnish region of Northern Ostrobothnia. The archipelago is located in the Bothnian Bay, off the northern coast of Finland proper, and consists of several small islands, islets, and skerries.

Geographical characteristics of the Hampaiset archipelago include rocky and granite-covered terrain, boulder beaches, and lack of vegetation due to harsh climate conditions. These geographical features are typical of the Baltic islands. The archipelago spans a considerable distance but covers a relatively small area.

The Hampaiset archipelago provides habitat for various marine species, including fish and shellfish, and supports diverse marine biodiversity. Birds, particularly seabirds, visit the area during their migrations and some species nest on the islands.

In the present day, the archipelago and its management are controlled by the Finnish association for state-owned nature reserve cooperation, Metsähallitus. This organization is responsible for demonstrating the natural and cultural value of the Hampaiset islands and protecting their biodiversity for future generations.

Limited landmass, harsh environment, and reduced anthropogenic pressure preserve the natural condition of the Hampaiset archipelago, providing scientists with an alternative perspective on Finland's geography, its protection laws, and its natural habitat management in general, as well as emphasizing its ancient climate story.
