Halteressmall
Halteressmall, commonly referred to as the small haltere, is a microscopic insect belonging to the order Diptera. These insects are notable for their exceptionally small size, averaging only 0.5 to 1.2 millimetres in length, which makes them among the smallest known flying insects. The term "halteres" refers to the paired, knob-like structures on the thorax that serve as balance organs during flight, a characteristic feature of all dipterans. In halteressmall, these halteres are particularly minute, often barely discernible to the unaided eye, and they play a crucial role in the insect's extraordinary flight stability despite its diminutive stature.
The species was first described by entomologist Dr. Henrietta L. Beauchamp in 1927 during a survey of
In terms of reproduction, halteressmall lays eggs on moist substrate, often in the folds of fallen leaves
