Solid propellants are a pre-mixed solid compound that burns when ignited. They are generally simpler in design, reliable, and can be stored for long periods. Examples include gunpowder, which was one of the earliest forms of rocket propellant, and modern composite propellants made of a fuel (like aluminum or rubber) and an oxidizer (like ammonium perchlorate). Solid propellants are often used in booster rockets and military applications due to their simplicity and quick ignition.

Liquid propellants consist of a fuel and an oxidizer that are stored separately in liquid form and pumped into a combustion chamber where they mix and react. This allows for greater control over thrust and the ability to shut down and restart the engine. Common liquid fuels include kerosene and liquid hydrogen, while oxidizers often include liquid oxygen or nitrogen tetroxide. Liquid propellants are favored for their high performance and efficiency, making them suitable for main rocket engines in space missions.

Hybrid propellants combine elements of both solid and liquid propellants. Typically, a solid fuel is used, and a liquid or gaseous oxidizer is injected into the combustion chamber. This design offers some of the safety and storage advantages of solid propellants while providing the control and efficiency benefits of liquid propellants.
