Hagstofa Íslands, known in English as Statistics Iceland, is the national statistics office of Iceland. Established by legislation, it functions as the country’s official statistical authority and is responsible for producing, validating, and disseminating statistics that describe Iceland’s economy, population, society and environment.

The agency collects data through censuses, surveys, and administrative registers and coordinates national statistical programs in collaboration with government ministries and other public bodies. Its work covers a broad range of domains, including macroeconomic indicators, labour market statistics, prices and inflation, demography, health, education, housing, and environmental statistics.

In its operations, Hagstofa Íslands adheres to international statistical standards and classifications and participates in Nordic, European and global statistical networks. It aligns with guidelines from bodies such as the System of National Accounts and consumer price indices, and it collaborates with organizations including Eurostat, the United Nations Statistics Division, and the IMF. The agency maintains strict confidentiality of individual data and releases statistics in aggregated form to protect privacy.

Statistics are published on an open data portal and through regular reports, including annual and quarterly releases, statistical yearbooks, and thematic publications. Data are typically available in Icelandic and English and are designed to be accessible to policymakers, businesses, researchers, and the general public. The agency also provides metadata and methodological documentation to support reproducibility.

As the country’s official statistics office, Hagstofa Íslands informs public policy, supports evidence-based decision making, and contributes to research and public accountability.
