Hadithhadis

Hadithhadis is not a standard term in Islamic scholarship; it appears to be a noncanonical or duplicated phrasing that blends the Arabic word hadith with the Malay/Indonesian word hadis. In broader usage, the term “hadith” refers to reports about the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad that are transmitted through chains of narrators.

Core elements of hadith literature include isnad (the chain of transmitters) and matn (the text of the report). Isnad establishes a lineage of transmission and is used by scholars to assess reliability. Matn is the content being transmitted, which may be subjected to linguistic, contextual, and historical scrutiny to determine its authenticity and relevance.

Hadith collections vary by tradition. In Sunni Islam, major collections such as those compiled by al-Bukhari and Muslim, along with others like Abu Dawood, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, are highly regarded and organized into canonical books. In Shia Islam, differing compilations emphasize the sayings of the Prophet’s family and companions. Outside these traditions, numerous scholars produced commentaries, collections, and biographical works that trace the chains and evaluate credibility.

Classification of hadith commonly uses categories such as sahih (authentic), hasan (good), and da‘if (weak), with further distinctions among mutawatir (widely transmitted) and ahad (single chain) reports. Contemporary scholarship may combine traditional methods with historical-critical analysis to assess authenticity and context. Hadith literature remains a primary source for Islamic law, theology, and practice, informing rulings, ethics, and daily customs.
