Haarmasken

Haarmasken, Dutch for hair masks, are cosmetic products used in hair care to provide intensive conditioning and repair. They are typically applied after washing and left on the hair for several minutes before rinsing. The goal is to improve moisture, softness, strength, and manageability, particularly for dry, damaged, or chemically treated hair.

Most masks use a combination of water, conditioning agents (such as cationic surfactants and polymers), humectants (glycerin, propylene glycol), oils or butters, and often proteins or amino acids (keratin, collagen) to reinforce the hair fiber. Some masks are clarifying or detoxifying, using chelating agents to remove buildup. There are also color-depositing masks and overnight masks that are designed for deeper penetration.

Usage guidelines vary by product and hair type: apply to towel-dried hair, focusing on lengths and ends; leave for 5-20 minutes; rinse thoroughly; adjust frequency from once a week to after chemical treatments. For very dry or damaged hair, more frequent use may be beneficial; for fine hair, lighter formulas are preferred.

Effects are temporary and depend on the product and hair condition; they do not permanently repair structural damage. Regular use can improve detangling, shine, and reduce frizz. Users should perform a patch test if sensitive to fragrances or active ingredients and avoid contact with eyes. Store masks in a cool, dry place and check expiration dates.
