Haarbereich

Haarbereich is a term occasionally encountered in German-language discussions of harmonic analysis and locally compact groups. It combines Haar with Bereich (region or area) and is used informally to denote the domain or subset of a locally compact group on which a Haar measure is considered or evaluated. The phrase is not a standard technical object with its own axioms in formal texts; rather, it functions as convenient shorthand for a particular subset of the group relevant to a problem or a region of integration.

In formal terms, the central object in this context is the Haar measure. For a locally compact group G, there exists a left-invariant measure μ defined on the Borel σ-algebra of G, unique up to a positive scalar factor. For any measurable set E ⊆ G, μ(E) is its Haar measure. When writers refer to a Haarbereich, they typically mean a specific measurable subset of G or a region under discussion where the Haar measure is applied, rather than specifying a separate structure.

Examples help illustrate the usage. In the real line R under addition, the Haar measure coincides with the Lebesgue measure, so a Haarbereich could be an interval [a, b] or any Lebesgue-measurable subset. In more general groups, the choice of Haarbereich is simply the particular subset of interest for which one computes μ.
