HTMLversions

HTMLversions refers to the different iterations and specifications of the HyperText Markup Language. The evolution of HTML has been a continuous process, driven by the need to support new web technologies and improve the capabilities of web pages.

The initial version, HTML, was developed by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990s. It was a relatively simple markup language designed for sharing scientific information. Following this, HTML 2.0 was published in 1995, standardizing many of the features that had become common practice.

HTML 3.2, released in 1997, introduced support for tables, applets, and other complex elements, making web pages more dynamic and visually rich. HTML 4.0 and its successor, HTML 4.01 (1999), further refined the language, introducing concepts like style sheets (CSS) and scripting (JavaScript) as separate entities to better separate content from presentation.

The most significant shift occurred with HTML5. Officially standardized by the W3C in 2014, HTML5 represents a major overhaul, introducing new semantic elements like article, nav, and section, robust multimedia support with audio and video tags, and improved APIs for web applications. HTML5 was designed to be backward compatible and to provide a more consistent experience across different browsers and devices, including mobile.

The development of HTML versions has always been a collaborative effort, involving the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG). This ongoing evolution ensures that HTML remains the foundational language of the World Wide Web, adapting to the ever-changing landscape of web development.
