Timothy John Berners-Lee, born 1955 in London, is a British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web. While working at CERN, he developed the first Web browser and server and authored the first Web page, which described the Web and how to use it.

In 1989 he proposed the Web as a global information system based on hypertext. Between 1990 and 1991 he created the core Web technologies—HTML, HTTP, and URIs (URLs)—and the first website went online at info.cern.ch in 1991.

In 1994 he co-founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at MIT to develop and promote standards for Web interoperability. He has since led efforts to maintain an open and accessible Web.

Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Foundation in 2009 to advance an open Web and to address issues such as access, privacy, and governance.

He studied physics at Oxford University, earning a BA in 1976. He was knighted in 2004 for services to the Web and was honored with the ACM A.M. Turing Award in 2016 for inventing the Web. He has held positions at MIT and remains active in Web standards and research through the Web Foundation and related initiatives.
