HIPEemulsioiden

HIPEemulsioiden refers to high internal phase emulsions. These are a type of emulsion where one phase, the internal phase, occupies a significantly larger volume than the other, the external phase. Typically, the internal phase volume fraction is greater than 74% and can exceed 95%. This high concentration of the internal phase leads to unique rheological properties, often making HIPEemulsioiden exhibit gel-like behavior.

HIPEemulsioiden are typically formed by vigorously mixing a large volume of one liquid with a smaller volume of another immiscible liquid in the presence of an emulsifier. The emulsifier is crucial for stabilizing the fine droplets of the internal phase within the continuous external phase. Common emulsifiers include surfactants, polymers, or even solid particles.

These emulsions find applications in various fields. They are used as precursors for the synthesis of porous materials, such as polyHIPE (polyhigh internal phase emulsion) polymers, which possess high porosity and large surface area, making them suitable for applications in catalysis, adsorption, and filtration. HIPEemulsioiden can also be employed in cosmetics and personal care products as thickeners or carriers for active ingredients, and in the food industry as texturizing agents. Their ability to encapsulate and deliver substances is another area of interest.
