HFCkäyttöä refers to the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). HFCs are a group of synthetic organic compounds used as refrigerants, propellants in aerosols, solvents, and foaming agents. They were developed as replacements for ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

While HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer, many of them are potent greenhouse gases with high global warming potentials (GWPs). This means that even small emissions can contribute significantly to climate change. Consequently, there is a global effort, driven by agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs.

The phase-down aims to transition to alternatives with lower GWPs, such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons and CO2, or improved efficiency in existing systems. The transition involves significant technological and logistical challenges for industries that rely heavily on HFCs, including refrigeration, air conditioning, and automotive sectors. Research and development are ongoing to find and implement sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
