The method involves a multidisciplinary team who systematically examine the process design, operation, and maintenance aspects using a series of guide words.

The core of the HAZOPmenetelmän lies in the application of guide words to specific process parameters. These guide words, such as "No," "More," "Less," "As Well As," "Part Of," "Other Than," and "Reverse," are combined with process parameters like "Flow," "Pressure," "Temperature," and "Level" to generate potential deviations from the intended design. For instance, "No Flow" or "More Pressure" are considered. For each identified deviation, the team investigates the possible causes, consequences, and existing safeguards.
