H2O, commonly known as water, is a chemical compound composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. It is a polar molecule, meaning it has a slight positive charge on the hydrogen atoms and a slight negative charge on the oxygen atom. This polarity allows water to dissolve many other substances, making it an excellent solvent.

Water exists in three states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam or water vapor). The transition between these states is driven by temperature and pressure. At standard atmospheric pressure, ice melts into liquid water at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), and liquid water boils into steam at 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit).

H2O is essential for all known forms of life. It plays a crucial role in biological processes such as metabolism, nutrient transport, and temperature regulation. The Earth's surface is largely covered by water, with oceans, lakes, rivers, and glaciers being major reservoirs. The water cycle describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth.

Beyond its biological significance, water is vital for various industrial and domestic applications, including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and sanitation. Its unique physical and chemical properties, such as high surface tension, high specific heat capacity, and its ability to act as a pH buffer, contribute to its widespread importance.
