Höyrykammiokuivaus, also known as steam kiln drying or steam tempering, is a method used to dry wood, particularly in the timber industry. This process utilizes saturated steam at elevated temperatures to rapidly reduce the moisture content of lumber. The primary goal is to achieve a stable and dry product, making it suitable for various applications by preventing warping, cracking, and fungal decay.

The process typically involves placing freshly sawn lumber into a sealed chamber. Saturated steam is then introduced, raising the temperature and humidity within the chamber. The steam penetrates the wood, heating it from the outside in. This elevated temperature and pressure help to break down certain wood components and drive out moisture. As the steam condenses on the cooler wood surface, it helps to lubricate the wood fibers, potentially reducing internal stresses.

After a specific period, the steam is vented, and the chamber is often subjected to a drying phase, which may involve air circulation and controlled temperature reduction to further remove moisture and stabilize the wood. The duration and specific conditions of steam kiln drying are dependent on the wood species, its thickness, and the desired final moisture content. This method is known for its speed compared to conventional air drying or some other kiln drying techniques.
