In Sweden, major högtider include Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Epiphany, Midsummer Eve and Midsummer Day, Walpurgis Night, All Saints’ Day, Easter, Pentecost, and Sweden’s National Day on June 6. Some högtider have strong religious roots, while others are more secular or folkloric, yet many are celebrated with shared customs such as meals, songs, dancing, and time with family. Observance can vary regionally and over time, reflecting broader social changes.

Common customs involve gatherings, feasting, and rituals like lighting candles, attending church services, processions, or visiting graves. In practice, Christmas Eve is often the main celebration in Sweden, with a festive dinner and gift exchange; Midsummer is marked by communal meals and activities around the maypole; All Saints’ Day may include cemetery visits; and Walpurgis Night features bonfires. Public institutions may close or adjust schedules, and travel increases around some holidays.

Etymologically, högtid translates roughly to a “high day” or day of special status, signaling a ceremonial or commemorative purpose. The concept encompasses a mix of religious heritage, national identity, and cultural traditions that shape annual rhythms in many societies.
