Héjgyulladás

Héjgyulladás, also known as oviductitis, is an inflammation of the oviduct in birds. The oviduct is the passageway through which eggs travel from the ovary to the cloaca. This condition can affect various bird species, including domestic poultry and wild birds.

Héjgyulladás can be caused by several factors, most commonly bacterial infections. These infections can originate from the digestive tract, the cloaca, or be introduced through the oviduct during egg laying. Other potential causes include fungal infections, parasitic infestations, and physical trauma to the oviduct. Nutritional deficiencies and stress can also contribute to the development or exacerbation of the condition.

Symptoms of héjgyulladás vary depending on the severity and the causative agent. They may include a decrease in egg production, the laying of misshapen or soft-shelled eggs, and the presence of abnormal discharge from the cloaca. Affected birds might also show signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal discomfort or swelling. In severe cases, internal egg rupture or peritonitis can occur, leading to more serious health complications.

Diagnosis of héjgyulladás typically involves a physical examination, evaluation of egg laying history, and sometimes laboratory tests such as bacterial cultures or necropsy. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for bacterial infections, while antifungals are used for fungal cases. Supportive care, including nutritional supplements and management of stress, can also be beneficial. Prevention involves maintaining good hygiene, proper nutrition, and minimizing stress in bird populations.
