The underlying cause of gyökérérzékenység is typically the exposure of the tooth's dentin, the layer beneath the enamel. This exposure can occur due to various factors including gum recession, tooth decay, or enamel erosion. When the dentin is exposed, the microscopic tubules within it become vulnerable, allowing stimuli to reach the sensitive nerves at the tooth's core, leading to pain.

Common reasons for gum recession include aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, and age-related changes. Tooth decay can compromise the protective enamel layer, exposing the dentin.
