Gyógyszerkutatások refers to the multifaceted process of discovering, developing, and bringing new medicines to market. This extensive undertaking involves a series of rigorous stages, beginning with basic research to understand disease mechanisms and identify potential drug targets. This is followed by preclinical research, where compounds are tested in laboratory settings and in animal models to assess their safety and efficacy.

Once a drug candidate shows promise, it enters clinical trials, which are divided into several phases. Phase I trials involve a small group of healthy volunteers to evaluate safety, dosage, and how the drug is metabolized. Phase II trials test the drug in a larger group of patients with the specific condition to determine its effectiveness and further assess side effects. Phase III trials involve a much larger and more diverse patient population to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, compare it to existing treatments, and collect information that will allow the drug to be used safely.

If the clinical trials are successful, the pharmaceutical company submits an application to regulatory authorities, such as the European Medicines Agency or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, for approval. Post-market surveillance, known as Phase IV trials, continues after a drug is approved to monitor its long-term safety and effectiveness in the general population.
