Gwydion

Gwydion, also known as Gwydion fab Don, is a legendary figure in Welsh medieval literature. In the corpus known as the Mabinogion, he is described as a prince of the tribe of Dôn and a leading practitioner of magic and clever trickery. His character is marked by wit, versatility, and skill in enchantment, disguise, and poetic craft.

The most extensive account of Gwydion appears in the Fourth Branch, Math fab Mathonwy, where he and his companions engage in a series of schemes and magical acts that drive the narrative. Through his wit and supernatural abilities, Gwydion plays a central role in the birth and upbringing of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, a hero who becomes a ruler in Gwynedd. The episodes surrounding Lleu’s birth and protection are among the most well-known moments associated with Gwydion's legend.

In addition to Lleu’s story, Gwydion is credited with various feats of enchantment, and he is associated with the arts of poetry and craft. He is frequently portrayed as a strategist whose planning shapes the course of events within the mythic world of the Mabinogion.
