Gwenedeg
Gwenedeg is a dialect of the Breton language, spoken historically in and around the city of Vannes (Gwened in Breton) in the Morbihan department of Brittany, France. It is one of the major dialectal divisions of Breton, alongside Cornouaille, Léonard, and Trégorrois. Key distinguishing features of Gwenedeg often relate to pronunciation, with certain consonant shifts and vowel sounds differing from other dialects. For instance, the treatment of certain historical sounds can vary. Grammatical structures and vocabulary can also show regional variations, though these are generally understood by speakers of other Breton dialects. Like other Breton dialects, Gwenedeg has faced a decline in the number of speakers due to historical linguistic policies and societal changes. Efforts are underway by language revitalization organizations to preserve and promote Breton, including its various dialects like Gwenedeg, through education and cultural activities. While precise figures for Gwenedeg speakers are difficult to ascertain, it is recognized as an important part of Brittany's linguistic heritage.
