Guwahati

Guwahati is the largest city and a major urban center of Assam, serving as a gateway to Northeast India. It lies on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river in the Kamrup Metropolitan district and functions as a key commercial, educational, and cultural hub with road, rail, and air connections to other parts of the country.

The area has historical roots in the Kamrup region. Among its landmarks are the Kamakhya Temple, a prominent Shakti peeth shrine on Nilachal Hill, and cultural institutions such as the Assam State Museum, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, and the Guwahati Planetarium. Umananda Island, with the Umananda Temple, lies in the Brahmaputra nearby. The city hosts various festivals, including the Bihu season and Durga Puja.

Guwahati is an important economic center for the Northeast, with a growing services sector, information technology, education, and tea trade. The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre is a notable market for tea. The city is also a hub for higher education, hosting Gauhati University and several institutes; the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is located in North Guwahati, on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, contributing to research and technology.

In terms of transport, Guwahati is served by Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and major railway links through Guwahati Junction. The climate is humid subtropical with heavy monsoon rainfall; summers are hot and winters mild. The Brahmaputra and associated rivers influence the city’s economy and risk of seasonal flooding.
