Gubbio

Gubbio is a town and commune in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region of central Italy. It is located on the steep slopes of Mount Ingino, offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The town is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval towns in Italy, characterized by its narrow, winding streets, stone buildings, and a distinctly medieval atmosphere.

The history of Gubbio stretches back to pre-Roman times. It was an important center for the Umbri people and later became a Roman city known as Iguvium. During the Middle Ages, Gubbio flourished as a self-governing commune and a center of pottery production. The town is famously associated with Saint Francis of Assisi, who is said to have tamed a wolf in Gubbio, a story depicted in numerous artworks.

Key landmarks in Gubbio include the Piazza Grande, a vast trapezoidal square dominated by the Palazzo dei Consoli, a magnificent Gothic palace that houses a museum. The Palazzo Ducale, a Renaissance palace, also overlooks the square. The Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo, located at the summit of Mount Ingino, is a significant pilgrimage site and the destination of the Corsa dei Ceri, a unique and ancient festival held annually on May 15th. This festival involves teams carrying large wooden structures, known as ceri, in a race up the mountain. Gubbio's well-preserved architecture and rich history make it a popular tourist destination.
