Gründerzeit refers to a period in German history and culture, roughly spanning from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the economic crash of 1873. The term, literally translating to "founder's era" or "period of foundation," is primarily associated with a time of rapid industrialization, economic growth, and significant social change in the newly unified German Empire. This era was characterized by an optimistic spirit of enterprise, a boom in business and investment, and a burgeoning middle class.

Architecturally, Gründerzeit is known for its distinct style that emerged during this period. Buildings from this era often feature elaborate facades, ornate decorations, and a grandeur reflecting the prosperity of the time.
